Happy Holidays… Embrace The Moment!

"Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do." These words from Ecclesiastes chapter 9 may well be the biblical foundation for the saying "Eat, Drink, and Be Merry." From my perspective, especially when considering marriage, it's God's encouragement to "embrace the moment."

During the holiday season, numerous factors contribute to making it the busiest time of the year. People often delay their deadlines, turning their procrastination into your urgent tasks to complete before the year ends. You're trying to take a few days off around Christmas, but you must finish two weeks' worth of work in just five days. On top of that, everyone seems to send their Christmas gift list at the last minute, leaving you to navigate mall traffic or the pressure of ordering online in time for delivery. It can be overwhelming. Is this really what the holidays are meant to be?

For married couples, the hustle and bustle of the holiday season can detract from what makes this time of year truly special—each other. It's easy to become so task-focused that you lose sight of nurturing your relationship. Therefore, it's essential to intentionally embrace the moment together. Here are ten suggestions to help you slow down, reconnect, and enjoy the holidays as partners in life and love.

10 Ways to Embrace the Moment This Christmas Season

  1. Have a Christmas Movie Night

Pick a favorite holiday movie—romantic, funny, or nostalgic—and cuddle up on the couch with some hot cocoa. Consider classics like It's a Wonderful LifeThe Preacher's WifeA Christmas Story, or more recent favorites like Best Man Holiday, This Christmas and Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey. Laugh, cry, or simply enjoy the quiet time together.

  2. Attend a Candlelight Service

There's something deeply meaningful about standing together, holding candles, and singing "Silent Night." It's a moment to reflect on the season's true meaning and create a shared spiritual experience.

  3. Take a Drive to See Christmas Lights

Hop in the car, turn on some holiday music, and drive through neighborhoods or local parks with impressive light displays. Share your favorite sights and enjoy the festive atmosphere together.

  4. Write Each Other a Love Letter

In the midst of gift-giving, don't forget the gift of words. Write a letter expressing gratitude for your spouse and the joy they bring to your life.

  5. Host a Holiday Cheer Night with Friends

Invite a few close friends over for a relaxed evening of laughter, games, and simple holiday snacks. Sharing the season with others can bring you closer as a couple.

  6. Bake Christmas Treats Together

Put on some holiday music, roll up your sleeves, and bake cookies or other festive treats. It's a fun way to work together and create delicious memories.

  7. Exchange Thoughtful Stocking Stuffers

Fill each other's stockings with small, meaningful gifts. These don't have to be expensive; they just need to show that you know and cherish your partner.

  8. Pray Together Each Evening

Take a few minutes before bed to thank God for the day and pray for the days ahead. It's a grounding ritual that keeps you spiritually connected.

  9. Have a Pajama Day

Declare a "no-plans day," stay in your pajamas, and enjoy a relaxing time at home. Watch movies, play games, or simply lounge together without worrying about a schedule.

  10. Plan a Date Night

Amid the hustle and bustle, carve out time for just the two of you. Whether it's a fancy dinner or a simple coffee date, make each other the priority.

Cherishing the Season

This Christmas, let the busyness of the season remind you to slow down and reconnect with the one you love. Embracing the moment doesn't require extravagant plans or expensive gestures—it simply requires intentionality. By prioritizing your marriage during this special time of year, you not only strengthen your bond but also create cherished memories that will last a lifetime.

May your holidays be filled with joy, laughter, and the warmth of love. Embrace the moment, and Merry Christmas to you and your spouse!
